7 magical fly fishing destinations in Slovenia – part 3

The river Rižana

The river Rižana flows into the Slovenian sea. It begins its journey under the Karst edge, where permeable and impermeable rocks meet. Its characteristics are completely karst in nature, which is shown in its rapidly changing flow -which can settle down in a few days or even hours. The ideal flow rate for the fly fishing is between 1 and 4 m³/s. The river is 4-6 m wide and very overgrown with vegetation. Fish that swim in its flow are very timid and cautious. Among many beautiful colored hybrids you can also catch marble and rainbow trouts. Fly fishing season on the river Rižana is very long, starting with the 1st of March and ending on the 1st of December. The method of fly fishing should be adjusted depending on the water level and season. In spring and autumn months the fish are active throughout the day. You can catch them on various streamers, nymphs of natural colors, even larger sizes (# 8) and dry flies – FFly. On hot summer days, the fly fishing is completely different, fish are active only in the evening at dusk. The water level is very low, which means that you have to be very careful and avoid stepping into water. Stay on the riverbed and use flies made from softhackle or Klinkhammer, which you descend gently down the stream. So if you like to fly fish in smaller streams, the Rižana is the perfect river for you.

The river Sava in Radovljica

The Sava in this  district  offers excellent conditions for more experienced fishermen, because the terrain in  not accessible by car in many places,  but its unspoiled nature and beautiful flow of the Sava  are worth of walking. This part is home to rainbow trouts, brown trouts, huchens and graylings, many of them achieving enviable measures and presenting  true trophies for the fishermen. Some suggestions for the fishermen: fishing is the best when you use different imitations of  nymphs, especially for graylings and rainbow trouts; streamers are suitable if you want to catch larger specimens of trouts; the best time to fish with dry flies is in the evening; use thin leader wires (from 0.08 to 0.14 mm); the French technique of fly fishing with nymphs turns out to be excellent; use fly rods from # 2 to # 6 and bring high fly fishing boots that will allow you to cross the river.
