For fishing in Austria, in addition to the fishing license, the fisherman also needs a fishing permit, which may be annual (for Austrian nationals) or temporary (guest permit). Foreign fishermen usually buy a guest permit, which is the basis for buying a fishing licence later and fishing in the fishng districts in Austria.

Each federal state in Austria exercises control over the granting of fishing permits. A fisherman needs a different fishing permit when fishing in different states. Fishing in the Carinthia region requires a fishing license issued by the relevant Carinthia office. Fishing in Styria requires a fishing license issued by the appropriate Styrian office.

Unless you have a proper fishing permit, you cannot buy a fishing licence and may not fish in Austrian fishing districts.
