While we are all in the expentation of fly fishing season’s start<\/strong> \u00a0I would like to describe you the river mostly known by the fact that it made ones of the most beautiful caves in the world: the caves \u0160kocjanske jame<\/strong>. I’m talking about the river Reka<\/strong>, \u00a0managed by \u00a0the Fishing family Bistrica form Ilirska Bistrica.<\/p>\n

The river Reka flows into the \u00a0Adriatic sea \u00a0and it’s a typical carst river with torrential characteristics and numerous tributaries, which come down from forest Sne\u017eni\u0161ki gozd and Brkini-when the rains are heavy . The flow of the river varies between 0,5 m3\/s in dry season and 300 m3\/s in wet season, especially in spring and autumn months. Because the Reka is a small river with a narrow channel, the most \u00a0suitable time for \u00a0fishing<\/strong> in it is when the flow doesn’t exceed \u00a010 m3\/s.<\/strong> The banks of the river are abundant with luscious vegetation and trees. Its\u00a0 channel varies. It’s made out of rapids, long and deep pools, dams, water barriers of saws and mills, which were \u00a0used in the old days.<\/p>\n

The river Reka is a salmonids-cyprinids mixed district.<\/strong> \u00a0In its deeper pools we can find<\/strong> nice specimens \u00a0of indigenous marble trouts, wild carps and pikes.<\/strong> However in its rapids and shallow parts we can also catch some nice specimes of brown trouts<\/strong>, hybrids<\/strong>, rainbow trouts, chubs and barbels.<\/strong> The fish in the Reka are known to be very timid and cautious, so in order to catch them you have to have a lot of patience<\/strong> and persistence. A lot of times the difference betwen catching a fish or not is due to standing or kneeling in the water or just by \u00a0positioning your leg in or out of the water. <\/strong><\/p>\n

The best fly fishing spots<\/strong> are between Ilirska Bistrica and the caves \u00a0\u0160koncjanske jame<\/strong>. The ones most accessible<\/strong> for fly fishing are found near the main road between Ilirska Bistrica \u2013 Ribnica and Ribnica \u2013 \u0160koflje (direction Diva\u010da)<\/strong>. Such places are for example the Novak’s mill near Topolec<\/strong>, under the villages \u00a0of Smrje and Prem<\/strong>, near the\u00a0 bridge \u00a0to Ostro\u017eno Brdo, in valley Vremska<\/strong>\u00a0near the bridge to Suhorje<\/strong>, in the fly fishing district \u00a0C&R<\/strong> and downstream from the bridge in \u0160koflje<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The fly fishing season starts<\/strong> on \u00a0the 1st of March<\/strong> and ends on the 31st of \u00a0October. In the \u00a0begining of the season the fishing success is based on the quantity of water flow and potential\u00a0 \u00bbsnowy water\u00ab which comes form melting snow in gorest Sne\u017eni\u0161k igozd (which can have a very bad impact on fishing).\u00a0 Nevertheless in the begining<\/strong> of the season the most suitable flies are streamers<\/strong> (olive and darker colours), larvae and nymphs. The period \u00a0between \u00a0April and October can prove to be quite an experience. In this time<\/strong> an indispensable set\u00a0 of the flies must contain<\/strong>: nymphs, dry flies, ants, may flies and CDC elks.<\/p>\n

According to the\u00a0 size of the fly\u00a0 comes also the size and type of the rod<\/strong> which should be \u00a0number #6<\/strong> and down (the same goes for fly line), the length<\/strong> of the rod should also be around 9 ft.<\/strong> In the dry season it’s good\u00a0 to have fluorocarbon line<\/strong> or very fine line<\/strong> (0,14mm or less).<\/p>\n
